This collection of five sculptural portraits form a quiet, reverent study of Britain’s native mammals: timeless figures woven into the country’s natural and cultural fabric. The ‘Wild Heart of Britain’ reflects a deep respect for the land and its enduring wildlife, drawing on themes of mythology, memory, and quiet resilience.
With a nod to Britain’s rich historical tapestry, from ancient folklore to contemporary conservation, each piece speaks to the animals’ symbolic role as guardians of place, spirit, and continuity. Together, they embody a wildness that is not lost, but watchful; not vanished, but enduring, a living thread between Britain’s past, present, and future.

Each sculpture begins with an idea, sometimes sparked by research, other times inspired by direct encounters in the wild. From there, the concept is developed into a sculpted portrait, carefully shaped in oil-based clay to capture even the finest details.
Once the form is complete, I create a mould in silicone rubber, which preserves every nuance of the surface. To support this, the mould is encased in a fiberglass jacket, forming a rigid shell that holds the silicone securely in place. This stage not only safeguards the original clay sculpture but also prepares it for casting in more enduring materials.

Once a mould is complete, it can be cast in a variety of materials, each chosen to enhance the character of the subject. For this collection, I have worked with cold-cast iron, bronze, slate, stone, and marble, allowing the material itself to echo the spirit of the form.
After casting, every sculpture is individually hand-finished. Layers of patina are applied to build depth and colour, then carefully buffed to reveal the texture of the underlying material. The iron casts are encouraged to rust naturally, developing a rich, organic surface that speaks of time and transformation. Finally, each piece is sealed with a protective wax, ensuring durability while allowing it to exist in dialogue with the natural elements.
