‘Hindsight’ portrays the otter in a rare, intimate moment: head and neck curved back in a sleek twist, as though glancing over its shoulder before slipping away. This pose captures the otter’s essence, alert, agile, and secretive, a creature half seen, never fully held.

This sculpture won 'Best of Show' in the Association of Animal Artists Online exhibition.

Once driven to near extinction in Britain by pollution and loss of habitat, the otter has since made a remarkable return. Its presence today is a testament to resilience, survival, and the lessons learned when nature is given space to heal. The title ‘Hindsight’ reflects this story, a reminder that recovery depends on recognising the past and carrying it forward.

Sculpted in careful detail, the otter here is not playful, but poised; not drifting in water, but taut with awareness. Its slender form suggests both strength and fragility, a life lived in constant motion between shadow and current, land and water.

In folklore, otters were seen as guardians of rivers, elusive shapeshifters tied to liminality. ‘Hindsight’ honours that duality: the real and the remembered, the momentary glance and the enduring presence. It is a portrait of survival and memory, an animal forever turning back, even as it slips ahead.
