‘Remnant’ is a sculptural tribute to one of Britain’s most iconic and enduring native mammals, the badger. Captured in a quiet, upward moment of pause, this piece reflects not only the physical presence of the animal, but the weight of heritage and continuity it carries within the British landscape.

Badgers have lived in the countryside for centuries, inhabiting intricate underground setts that may be hundreds of years old, dwellings passed down through generations like ancestral homes. They live in close-knit clans of four to twelve, emerging at dusk to groom, play, and interact with a social complexity that refutes their secretive lives.

The title ‘Remnant’ speaks to resilience and memory, what endures beneath the surface. It alludes to the deep-rooted stability badgers represent in the ecosystem, but also offers a quiet nod to what has been threatened. ‘Remnant’ is not a protest, but a pause: a moment of reflection on coexistence, loss, and legacy.

In various European and Indigenous traditions, badgers are seen as spirit guides, connected to the earth element, ancestral knowledge, and self-reliance. ‘Remnant’ honours this symbolic role, positioning the badger as more than just a nocturnal creature; it is a keeper of time, a witness to change, and a quiet guardian of the land.
